For decades, Haida Gwaii has had the good fortune of being a popular training site for medical, nursing and nurse practitioner students, as well as Family Medicine residents. We are affiliated with the Northern Medical Program and the UBC Family Medicine Program. As a remote rural site, we offer learners a glimpse of what a full-scope rural medicine entails, and in turn we benefit from the wonderful energy and enthusiasm of our future care givers. Indeed, many of our current locums and new staff have once been learners in our communities. Our hospitality as a teaching site is key to the sustainability of our services. We are so very grateful to all who make our learners welcome - Haawa!

"I spent 2 weeks in Daajing Giids, Haida Gwaii for an ultrasound-focused Rural Family Practice elective. During my time here, I was able to significantly develop and strengthen my scanning skills, performing close to 50 point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) scans under the guidance of Dr. Tracy Morton, who is not only a POCUS expert, but also an incredible teacher and mentor. The physicians, other learners, patients, and the community in Daajing Giids were wonderful and welcoming. I also loved the natural beauty of Haida Gwaii and had lots of opportunities to explore the island!" Rebecca Zhuang, MD Student (Class of 2024)
